Today, generative AI and advanced editing tools have lowered that barrier. Fraudsters can manipulate identity documents, alter photographs, create synthetic faces and combine real and fabricated information to build identities that look perfectly legitimate at first glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For businesses that onboard customers remotely, this creates a difficult question: How do you know whether the identity submitted during KYC verification is genuine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer isn&#8217;t to look for one obvious mistake. That&#8217;s convenient for legitimate users, but it also gives fraudsters more opportunities to operate remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can potentially be used to manipulate identity documents, alter photographs, generate realistic-looking faces or create synthetic combinations of real and fabricated information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bigger problem is that a document can look authentic without actually being authentic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A perfectly rendered PAN card, passport or driving licence image does not necessarily prove that the document was genuinely issued to the person presenting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why document appearance alone should never be the foundation of a KYC decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective of KYC is not simply to determine whether an uploaded document looks real. It is to establish whether the person behind the application is genuinely who they claim to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction becomes increasingly important as AI-generated fraud becomes more sophisticated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Start_With_Document_Authenticity_Checks\"><\/span><strong>1. Depending on the document type and verification method, the system may also check security features or validate information against an authorised source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several potential warning signs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inconsistent fonts or spacing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Misaligned text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual image compression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Altered photographs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incorrect field formatting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suspicious metadata<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mismatched names or dates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Document numbers that don&#8217;t follow expected patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of image manipulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these should be treated as signals, not proof of fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A legitimate document photographed on a low-end smartphone or compressed while being uploaded can also show quality issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why the strongest verification systems combine document analysis with independent identity checks wherever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Dont_Stop_at_OCR\"><\/span><strong>2. The technology has done its job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that the information itself may be false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong KYC workflow should therefore move beyond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OCR \u2192 Data extraction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and toward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OCR \u2192 Document checks \u2192 Data validation \u2192 Identity verification<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is critical when designing an automated onboarding system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Match_the_Face_With_the_Identity\"><\/span><strong>3. Match the Face With the Identity<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the document has been analysed, the next question is straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the person presenting the document actually match the identity represented by it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Face matching can compare a live selfie or image with the photograph associated with the identity document or another authorised identity source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This introduces another layer of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fraudster may create a convincing document using someone else&#8217;s identity, but the face of the person completing verification may not match the photograph associated with that identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, face matching on its own is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph, replayed video or manipulated media may potentially fool a weak verification system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s where liveness detection becomes important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Use_Liveness_Detection_to_Detect_Presentation_Attacks\"><\/span><strong>4. Use Liveness Detection to Detect Presentation Attacks<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liveness detection attempts to determine whether the system is interacting with a real, live person rather than a representation of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can help defend against certain presentation attacks involving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Printed photographs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Images displayed on another screen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replayed videos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain manipulated or synthetic media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact technology varies between providers, but the objective remains the same: establish that the person participating in the verification is physically present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes increasingly important as generative AI makes synthetic faces and manipulated video more convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When evaluating a KYC provider, businesses shouldn&#8217;t simply ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Do you offer <a href=\"https:\/\/ongrid.in\/services\/face-match-check\">face matching<\/a>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;How do you detect presentation attacks and liveness failures?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gets closer to the actual security problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Cross-Check_Identity_Information\"><\/span><strong>5. Cross-Check Identity Information<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraud rarely exists in only one field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose an applicant submits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Name:<\/strong> Amit Kumar<br><strong>DOB:<\/strong> 14 March 1994<br><strong>Address:<\/strong> Delhi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong verification process should look for consistency across the available identity signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the name match the verified identity source?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the date of birth match?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the document number correspond to the expected format?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the face correspond to the identity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are there inconsistencies between the submitted information and trusted sources?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where businesses move from <strong>document verification<\/strong> to <strong>identity verification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Document verification asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Does this document appear genuine?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Identity verification asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Can we establish that this person is actually the identity they claim to be?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second question is much closer to the actual fraud problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Look_for_Synthetic_Identity_Patterns\"><\/span><strong>6. Use Authoritative Verification Wherever Available<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the strongest ways to detect a fake identity is to avoid relying solely on the document supplied by the customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where an authorised verification mechanism is available, businesses should consider using it as part of the KYC workflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly relevant in India, where digital identity infrastructure provides businesses with multiple ways to validate information depending on the use case and applicable requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The broader principle is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The closer verification gets to an independent source of truth, the less the business has to rely on the appearance of a customer-supplied document.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also why businesses should think carefully about which verification APIs and data sources they use rather than treating every verification method as equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Dont_Use_AI_Detection_as_a_Standalone_Decision\"><\/span><strong>8. Liveness can address certain presentation attacks, while additional risk signals may highlight suspicious patterns that aren&#8217;t visible in the document itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strength comes from combining these signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Build_a_Risk-Based_Review_Process\"><\/span><strong>9.
